GIDDINGS, Texas – Lee County Little League soon will replace outdated fencing and install a much-needed storage shed at Veterans Park, thanks to a $20,080 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and the City of Giddings.

The Community Development Partnership Program grant, along with $6,340 in matching funds from the Little League, will enable the group to install new chain-link fencing around the softball field, dugout and back stop, and purchase a portable building that can house maintenance equipment.

Tiffany Albrecht, board president, said restoring the fields at Veterans Park is essential for providing a safe, supportive environment where youth can develop relationships, self-esteem and discipline.

“We’ve been wanting to complete this project for about three years now,” Albrecht said. “The fields here were built in the ‘80s, and it’s hard to say the last time there were any updates to the fencing. This update is important not only for the aesthetic look of the field, but also for the safety of the players. If a ball is thrown into the outfield or rolls to the backstop, they won’t be injured by the old chain link.”

The grant also will enable the Little League to purchase and install a 10×16-foot storage shed to safely store equipment and protect it from the elements.

“It takes a lot of equipment to maintain the field, so we’ve been needing more storage for that equipment as a result,” Albrecht said. “Now we’ll be able to purchase a shed to store everything we need to keep the field up to date for our community.”

The fields, which are owned by the City of Giddings, are open from sunrise to sunset year-round.

The community grant is one of 37 grants awarded recently through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program, which helps volunteer fire departments, local governments, emergency responders and nonprofit organizations fund eligible capital improvement projects in LCRA’s wholesale electric, water and transmission service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. The City of Giddings is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and is a partner in the grant program.

Applications for the next round of grants will be accepted in January 2025. More information is available at lcra.org/cdpp.
