MASON, Texas – The City of Mason soon will construct a nine-hole disc golf course in Fort Mason City Park, thanks to a $12,767 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority.

The Community Development Partnership Program grant, along with $4,800 in labor provided as matching funds from the city, will expand both recreational opportunities in Mason and increase foot traffic to the park.

Chadrick Barnett, building official and code enforcement officer, said the disc golf course will provide new opportunities for social interaction, fun and exercise. It also will increase tourism by attracting visitors who are likely to spend money at local businesses and eat at local restaurants.

“This addition will not only open new areas of the park, it will also provide a fantastic recreational opportunity for the residents of Mason and visitors,” Barnett said. “Disc golf is a sport where you meet new people and make new friends, you can play whether you’re young or old, advanced or a beginner. We are incredibly grateful to LCRA for this generous grant, because it made the disc golf course at Fort Mason Park a reality.”

The new disc golf course is expected to attract visitors throughout the day, including drawing people to little used areas of the park.

Disc golf is a low-impact, inexpensive sport that encourages outdoor physical activity. It also provides a safe space for people to form clubs and enjoy exercise while playing a fun game.

The community grant is one of 37 grants awarded recently through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program, which helps volunteer fire departments, local governments, emergency responders and nonprofit organizations fund eligible capital improvement projects in LCRA’s wholesale electric, water and transmission service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. The City of Mason is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and is a partner in the grant program.

Applications for the next round of grants will be accepted in January. More information is available at lcra.org/cdpp.
