Electric and Magnetic Fields
Electric and magnetic fields (EMF) are invisible lines of force that surround all electrical appliances and devices. When electricity is generated, transmitted or used, EMF are produced. Common sources of EMF are home and workplace electrical appliances and local power lines. The strength of EMF from power lines decreases rapidly with distance.
Concerns have been raised about the potential health effects of EMF, however, extensive scientific research has established no direct link between exposure to power lines and adverse health effects, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Neither Texas nor the federal government has established any health standards relating to EMF.
