LCRA, City of Brenham award $4,896 grant for new lights at high school theater
New lighting system will enhance performances, community events
DEC. 13, 2024
BRENHAM, Texas – The Brenham High School Theater soon will replace its 25-year-old lighting system with more modern, dynamic lighting for its performances and community events hosted in the space, thanks to a $4,896 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and the City of Brenham.
The Community Development Partnership Program grant, combined with $1,224 in matching funds from the Brenham High School Theater Booster Club, will provide new lighting infrastructure for the theater, improving lighting during performances and offering valuable educational opportunities for performers and lighting technicians.
“The educational benefits our students will receive from this lighting system are immense,” said Kara Freeman, Brenham High School theater director. “Thank you to LCRA for investing in the next generation and their love of the arts.”
The new lighting equipment will enable Brenham High School Cub Company students to explore and learn advanced lighting technology firsthand.
“As someone fascinated by moving lights, I’m really excited to learn about all the features of this new system,” said Trey Gates, a Brenham High School student and head of lighting. “We appreciate LCRA selecting our school to receive this grant.”
The equipment also will help transform the theater into a more dynamic and welcoming space for the community.
“We look forward to seeing how this new lighting equipment will elevate the students’ productions and cannot wait for the community to see their performances,” said Kristi Reddoch, president of the Brenham High School Theater Booster Club. “This upgrade will make their shows even more memorable for everyone who attends.”
During the 2023-2024 school year, more than 200 students participated in the school’s theater program as cast and crew, with hundreds more attending performances and activities held in the space. The new energy-efficient lighting system will reduce operational costs while improving the versatility of the venue, enabling the theater to host workshops, business functions and other community events.
The community grant is one of 37 grants awarded recently through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program, which helps volunteer fire departments, local governments, emergency responders and nonprofit organizations fund eligible capital improvement projects in LCRA’s wholesale electric, water and transmission service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. The City of Brenham is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and is a partner in the grant program.
