Meteorologist Bob Rose has volunteered with Meals on Wheels for nearly three decades

For nearly 30 years, LCRA Meteorologist Bob Rose has delivered hot meals to Central Texans while volunteering for Meals on Wheels. Along the way, Bob believes he’s also brought a ray of sunshine to the people he helps.

“I look at this as a way to give back to the community – to help those who are less fortunate,” Bob said. “I see how important that interaction is to them, and it makes me feel good, too, to be that person to knock on the door and say, ‘Hey, how are you doing? Here’s your warm meal.’”

WHY IT MATTERS: Bob saw the value of Meals on Meals firsthand while growing up in Houston. His aunt benefited from daily meal deliveries after her husband’s death.

“She was living by herself, and she was not keeping up with her health or the kind of meals she needed,” Bob recalled. “She got on Meals on Wheels to give her at least one good meal every day, and it really did help.”
Meals on Wheels Central Texas provides nourishment, care and a connection to community to nearly 5,000 people, with the help of more than 8,000 volunteers. In many instances, the daily meal deliveries ensure that older Central Texans can continue to live independently in their homes.

WANTING TO GIVE BACK: Bob signed up as a Meals on Wheels volunteer about a year after he arrived at LCRA in 1995.

“When I arrived at LCRA, I quickly saw that part of the culture involved giving back to the communities in our service area,” Bob said.

He is one of more than 60 LCRA volunteers who work with a partner to deliver meals at lunchtime. Meals on Wheels gives him a break from forecasting Texas weather and sharing updates with employees and the public.

“My job is not just about floods and droughts,” Bob said. “It’s also about wintry weather and heat outbreaks. All of it affects the organization in different ways. It’s my job to keep everyone apprised of weather developments.”
