Monday night’s storm system has now pushed well off to the east. It brought some nice totals of rain to much of the region, although there were parts of the Hill Country and the coastal plains where totals were less than a quarter inch.
In the wake of Monday’s storm system, sunny and very pleasant fall weather will be in place Wednesday and Thursday. Expect daily high temperatures to be around 78-80 degrees.
But this stretch of dry weather will be short-lived as the next storm system is already on the horizon. Tuesday’s analysis shows a trough of low pressure off the west coast of Canada that is forecast to dive southeast across the Rockies Wednesday into Thursday, then push east across northern Texas Thursday night into Friday. This next trough will help push another Pacific cold front across the state Thursday night into Friday morning.
It’s interesting to note that many of the same ingredients which came together to produce Monday’s night’s storms are predicted to come together again with this next storm system. In advance of the approaching trough, considerable Gulf moisture looks to quickly spread north into Texas Thursday afternoon and Thursday night. This will promote the development of scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms across the region beginning Thursday evening. Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to increase in coverage and intensity Thursday night through Friday morning as the cold front tracks to the east. The rain should taper off by early Friday afternoon.
There are early indications some of the thunderstorms could be strong to severe—especially across the parts of the Hill Country. The Storm Prediction Center’s Severe Weather Outlook for the period 7 am Thursday through 7 am Friday calls for a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms over the western half of the Hill Country and the Edwards Plateau. This risk area for severe storms could expand eastward to the Interstate 35 corridor over the next couple of days as new forecast data comes in.
Rainfall is shaping up to be a little heavier with this next system. National Weather Service’s rainfall forecast for Thursday night and Friday calls for widespread totals of 0.5 to 1 inch across the eastern Hill Country, along with Central and Southeast Texas.
NWS Rainfall Outlook for the Period 7 pm Thursday through 7 pm Friday:
Sunny and pleasant weather is forecast for the upcoming weekend. Expect high temperatures in the 70s, with low temperatures in the upper 40s.
