LCRA Reports Sewage Spill At Elgin Wastewater System

For Immediate Release: June 20, 2008 01:50 PM

ELGIN – LCRA crews discovered an overflow from a manhole Thursday afternoon at the Elgin Wastewater System. The overflow was caused by a blockage in a pipeline and spilled an estimated 200,000 gallons into Little Sandy Creek over the past two days. The manhole is located north of the wastewater treatment plant. The spill has entered Little Sandy Creek and is crossing under the bridge at FM 1704.

LCRA crews are working to clear the blockage in the pipeline. LCRA has notified the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality of the spill.

The City of Elgin public water supply was not affected by the spill.

While LCRA is not aware of any drinking water wells in the vicinity, private well owners downstream of the plant should boil their drinking water for the next three days as a precautionary measure. Residents should avoid swimming in the affected area of Little Sandy Creek.
